The unemployment figures for August in Malaga showed that despite many temporary contracts coming to an end, the number of people who are registered as being out of work fell by 46. This may not be a large drop, but it is the first time in a decade that unemployment in the province has fallen in August. Malaga was the only province in Andalucía where there was a reduction in the number of people who are out of work; 10,365 more registered as unemployed in the region last month and nationally, unemployment rose by 38,179 in August.

Barcelona has been ranked 40th in the 50 cities with the best quality of life in the world. Madrid made it to 43rd. Other European cities on the list include Viena and Zurich.

The report studied 221 cities around the world, taking New York (which occupies 47th place) as the reference to compare various levels of quality of life, such as public services, the offer of nightlife and accommodation, the socio-cultural atmosphre, economic, political, social, educational and environment. The Council of Ministers has approved the extension to the Professional Re-qualification Programme (PREPARA). The measure takes retroactive effect from 16 August and will remain in force until 15 February 2013.

The extension was announced by the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, on 14 August, and was subsequently analysed with social stakeholders.

The Vice-President of the Government, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, pointed out that the reform of the PREPARA Plan has two objectives: firstly, that no-one without resources be left without State support and secondly, the training and reinsertion into the job market of the unemployed. Read more »

Specifically in 2012, more than two million euros (2,041,350) euros will be earmarked to promoting projects and activities associated with self-employment, the social economy and corporate social responsibility. This money will be managed by the non-profit organisations and public and private universities whose projects are selected via the tender published on Monday in the Official State Gazette.

“This financial aid is intended to help drive entrepreneurship in Spain, so all those activities that foster the entrepreneurial spirit through self-employment, the social economy and corporate social responsibility will be given priority.
